What "Missing" Actually Means
A missing element simply means that none of the eight characters carries that element in its raw form. Hidden stems inside the branches may still contain it. More importantly, the chart's balance is judged against the Day Master, not against a checklist of all five elements. A chart with no Water may be perfectly healthy if the Day Master does not need Water.
Balance Is About the Day Master
The real question is what the Day Master needs. A strong Wood Day Master may need Metal to shape it, or Fire to release it. If the missing element happens to be exactly what the chart needs, the gap is meaningful. If the missing element is not the useful element, its absence is mostly trivia.

If a missing element does matter, remedies can be practical: colors, locations, seasons, or work environments that carry that element. They work best when they change real conditions, not when they become lucky charms. A Water remedy for a dry chart might be working near water, choosing a northern-facing desk, or learning to slow down. Symbolic objects alone rarely change a pattern.
